Alamance Community College issued the following announcement on Apr. 13.
2022 Ronald L. McCarter Excellence in Teaching Award Recipient:
ROBERT DAVIS, Mathematics Instructor
Robert “Bob” Davis has been a mathematics instructor at the college since 2008 and serves as Coordinator of the campus Math Center. He has a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Elon University, and a Master of Arts in Mathematics from Wake Forest University.
Davis believes in the mission of the community college system and hopes that, as he helps students achieve their educational goals, they can also see enjoyment in learning mathematics.
“I have had the good fortune to serve as the Math Center Coordinator since it opened,” said Davis. “Recently I helped a student who was studying for a nursing entrance exam. I have helped colleagues prepare for the GRE and other graduate level coursework.”
2022 Adjunct Instructor of the Year Recipient:
SUSAN DALTON, English Instructor
English adjunct Susan Dalton, who teaches online, is an ACC retiree who gave approximately 29 years of full-time service to the college and community. Dalton has a Bachelor of Arts in English from UNC Chapel Hill, and a Master of Fine Arts in English from UNC Greensboro. She also holds a fourth degree black belt in Aikido, using her expertise to teach a class each semester in the martial art while at ACC.
Dalton has a passion for community college education that stems from personal experience through witnessing her brother’s success.
“My brother was not a strong student, yet he had many gifts traditional academic fields did not recognize,” she said. “I became interested in the importance of every student being given chances to become successful. My brother’s community college machining degree opened the door to a very lucrative career, paying off his mortgage before he was 40, and much success. I love the community college’s philosophy of meeting students where they are and, with the open door, giving them opportunities.”
Said ACC President Dr. Algie Gatewood: “Bob and Susan are excellent examples of what is possible when it comes to effective teaching and learning. Our students and college are fortunate to have them as members of our faculty.”
