Carrboro Fire-Rescue responds to apartment fire displacing 18 residents

The Carrboro Fire-Rescue Department responded on April 16 to a structure fire at 601 Jones Ferry Road, where heavy smoke and flames were reported in a multi-unit apartment building. Crews arrived in just over four minutes and found significant fire conditions on the second and third floors, prompting a second alarm for additional personnel. The fire was brought under control within about an hour.

A total of 18 residents were displaced due to extensive damage to several units and smoke damage affecting others. The property management group and the American Red Cross are assisting those affected with temporary housing and immediate needs. One resident was transported for minor injuries, while one firefighter was evaluated at the scene for minor injuries.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Preliminary estimates place property damage at $400,000.

Carrboro Fire-Rescue received support from several neighboring departments, including Chapel Hill Fire Department, White Cross Fire Department, North Chatham Fire Department, Orange Grove Fire Department, New Hope Fire Department, Eno Fire Department as well as Orange County Emergency Services and Carrboro Police Department.

Efforts continue to determine what caused the incident while affected residents receive assistance.
