Mayor Barbara Foushee announced on May 4 that Carrboro will mark the month of May with several community events and initiatives, including the start of the annual budget process, signature music festivals, and activities promoting cycling and healthy living.
The announcement highlights upcoming opportunities for residents to participate in shaping the town’s priorities. The annual budget process is beginning this month. Town Manager will present the recommended Town Budget and Capital Improvement Plan on May 12 during a council work session. Public hearings for community input are scheduled for May 19 and June 2 at Carrboro Town Hall, both starting at 6 p.m. “The town’s annual budget process includes determining funding for services and infrastructure as well as balancing community needs with available revenue. The overall process is grounded in transparency, public participation and alignment with community values,” Foushee said.
Freight Train Blues, Carrboro’s signature music event, returns for its twelfth year. This year’s concerts celebrate Elizabeth Cotten, a pioneering folk and blues artist from Carrboro. The opening concert on May 15 will feature Brenda Evans—Cotten’s great granddaughter—and her family alongside other artists. Events run every Friday from May 15 through June 12 at Carrboro Town Commons starting at 6:30 p.m., free to attend.
May is also Bike Month in Carrboro with social rides, workshops, a bike breakfast event on May 12 at the Elizabeth Cotten Bikeway, cycling tips sessions for older adults on May 14 at Drakeford Library Complex, a Community Bike Workshop on May 23 at the Farmers Market, as well as group rides supporting climate action goals by encouraging biking over car use.
Foushee also reminded residents about Move with the Mayor Spring Challenge—a program aimed at increasing physical activity and building social connections within the community.
“As always, I look forward to seeing you around town anytime. It continues to be an honor to serve our community,” Foushee said.
