The Town of Carrboro has opened applications for its Green Neighborhoods Grant Program, which provides up to $25,000 for projects that address climate change at the neighborhood level. The initiative is part of the Carrboro Community Climate Action Plan adopted in 2017 and aims to support efforts that make the town more environmentally resilient.
The grant program places a particular focus on projects benefiting low-income communities and communities of color, recognizing that these groups are often more affected by climate change impacts.
Chief Sustainability Officer Amy Armbruster said, “What makes this program truly unique is that instead of telling neighborhoods how to fight climate change, it empowers neighbors to work with neighbors to address the issues that they care about most in ways that they know will be successful.”
Past recipients have used funding from the program for a variety of initiatives. These include starting compost drop-off programs, building rain gardens to reduce flooding risk, planting native trees and community gardens, and launching educational campaigns aimed at increasing local awareness about climate action.
Applicants are expected to show strong neighborhood participation and present clear plans detailing both environmental and social benefits. The maximum award per project is $25,000. Applications must be submitted by February 18, 2026 at 5 p.m. More information can be found on the Green Neighborhoods Grant Webpage https://townofcarrboro.org/2778/Green-Neighborhoods-Grant-Program.
