The Carrboro Police Department announced on April 14 that a 17-year-old and a 16-year-old juvenile, who is a student at Carrboro High School, have been charged in connection with a shooting that occurred earlier the same day near Carrboro High School. The charges include felony possession of a handgun with an altered serial number and misdemeanor possession of a handgun by a minor. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident or the police response.

The shooting took place in woods adjacent to apartments located at 180 BPW Club Road, close to Carrboro High School. The situation began just before noon when the School Resource Officer at Carrboro High heard gunshots coming from the nearby apartment community. Officers responded quickly, detaining several individuals and ultimately taking two juveniles into custody. As a precaution, Carrboro High School was placed on lockdown until authorities confirmed there were no further threats, after which normal operations resumed.

The investigation remains ongoing and police say additional charges may be filed. The department thanked the Chapel Hill Police Department, Orange County Sheriff’s Office, and Hillsborough Police Department for their assistance during the response. “Incidents like this one require resources and personnel beyond what the police department has, and the mutual aid support is appreciated and shows the strength of law enforcement partnerships in Orange County,” said Chief Atack.

Authorities also expressed appreciation for students, staff, parents, and community members for their patience during the incident. Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to contact either the Carrboro Police Department or Crime Stoppers.
