The Town of Carrboro has been awarded the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for its fiscal year 2025–26 budget. This award is considered the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting and highlights Carrboro’s adherence to nationally recognized guidelines.
To receive this distinction, Carrboro’s budget document achieved “proficient” ratings in four required categories: policy document, financial plan, operations guide, and communications device. The budget also met all 14 mandatory evaluation criteria within these categories.
“This award reflects the hard work and excellence of our team,” said Town Manager Patrice Toney. “A budget is more than numbers. It is a statement of our priorities, our stewardship of public trust, and our commitment to the people we serve. I am deeply grateful to the Carrboro Town Council for adopting a budget that reflects our community’s values and long-term vision, and to our Finance team who worked collaboratively with department leaders to produce a budget that is transparent, accessible, and aligned with Carrboro’s goals.”
Carrboro joins more than 1,900 local governments across North America that participate in the GFOA Budget Awards Program. The recognition places Carrboro among a select group noted for excellence in presenting budgets and communicating financial information.
The award emphasizes ongoing efforts by the town to improve fiscal accountability and public understanding of municipal operations. GFOA publishes award recipients quarterly on its website as examples for other governments aiming to enhance their budgeting practices.
The Government Finance Officers Association is based in Chicago, Illinois, and provides best practices, professional development resources, and research for over 25,000 members working in government finance.
