Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools issued the following announcement on Feb. 21.
An excerpt (about masks) from today’s Community Update, from Dr. Nyah Hamlett, Superintendent:
“I typically begin these updates with personal reflections, but today I need to begin on the topic of masks. Once again, my inbox was flooded with opinions and questions about the universal indoor and outdoor mask mandate that we have in CHCCS (more to the point, the questions and opinions were mostly about when we will decide to end our universal mandate.) In the near future, there may or may not be a state law that will make this determination for us, but from our vantage point, the debate involving the governor and state legislature remains unresolved as of this writing.
With that in mind, as of today we choose to keep our mask mandate in place for now, because we believe it’s the safest, healthiest choice for our students, families and staff. We know not everyone agrees with us on that point, and that’s at least one reason why our Board of Education will discuss the matter at its upcoming meeting, which is next Thursday, March 3. As we’ve shared previously, we are still considering what a gradual approach to becoming “mask recommended” (instead of “mask required”) might look like, and we will discuss that next week. If anything else happens between now and then, we’ll keep you posted.”
