County of Orange issued the following announcement on Mar. 21.

The Orange County Human Relations Commission is pleased to announce documentary director and producer Julie Cohen will be participate in an audience Q&A as the keynote guest at the Pauli Murray Awards Ceremony to be held Sunday, March 27 at 3 p.m. via Zoom. “My Name Is Pauli Murray,” the documentary film released in 2021, was directed and written by Ms. Cohen and Betsy West. Additional writers include Talleah Bridges McMahon and Cinque Northern. The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2021, followed by a limited release nationally in September 2021 before the film’s purchase by Amazon Studios.

The Academy Award nominated RBG was also directed and produced by Ms. Cohen along with filmmaking partner Betsy West. RBG was the winner of an Emmy Award for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking and was the ninth feature length documentary she directed.

Her other films include: “American Veteran,” winner of the 2017 Panavision New York Filmmakers Showcase and the G.I. Film Festival Founders Award, “The Sturgeon Queens,”  an official selection at the 2015 Berlin International Film Festival, winner of Best of the Fest at San Francisco Jewish Film Festival and recipient of Audience Choice Awards at 9 Festivals. It later aired on PBS and was distributed by 7th Art Releasing.

As a producer at NBC’s Dateline she reported, wrote and produced more than 30 hour- and two-hour long primetime television programs on true crime, breaking news and popular culture.  As a producer at CourtTV she created and produced “Supreme Court Watch,” an hour-long weekly program covering cases before the United States Supreme Court. 

Ms. Cohen continues her documentary filmmaking as a director and producer creating documentaries under her production company, BetterThanFiction Productions & also for Storyville Films.
