County of Orange issued the following announcement on Nov. 29.
In the early 1980s the HIV/AIDS epidemic changed our world forever. 42 years ago people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS could only expect to live 1-2 years after their diagnosis. Today, thanks to improvements in the effectiveness of treatment with antiretroviral therapy or ART, people with who are diagnosed early and who get and stay on ART can keep the virus suppressed and live long and healthy lives. Now issues of aging are a major and expected focus, nearly half of people living with diagnosed HIV/AIDS in the United States are aged 50 and older.
People aging with HIV/AIDS share many of the same health concerns as the general population aged 50 and older. The concerns of dealing with multiple chronic diseases or conditions, the use of multiple medications, changes in physical and cognitive abilities, and increased vulnerability to stressors place greater importance on one’s health and how they care for themselves as they age. In honor of World AIDS day, join our distinguished panelists as we discuss what the journey towards aging well looks like and how to maximize a healthy lifestyle.
