FOIA Request to Orange County regarding new or amended contracts on January 16, 2026.
On January 16, 2026, a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted to Orange County, North Carolina. The request seeks access to records of all newly executed contracts or amendments entered into by the county between January 1, 2024, and December 31, 2024. The areas of interest specified in the request include public works, information technology or digital services, and consulting or professional services. The requester has asked for these documents in electronic format where possible.
The request is made under the North Carolina Public Records Law, G.S. §132-1., which allows for the disclosure of public records to ensure transparency and accountability within governmental institutions. The Chapel Hill Review, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive news coverage on local governmental affairs, has submitted this request as part of its commitment to informing the public about government actions.
The requester has also indicated that they are a member of The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy. This non-profit organization assists media companies and advocacy groups in investigating state and federal governmental agencies using Freedom of Information and Sunshine Laws. Of note is that Orange County’s educational performance statistics reveal that out of 1,407 senior students taking the science portion of the ACT in its school districts during the 2022-23 school year, 692 students (49.2%) were considered ready for college.
