Orange County announces Memorial Day closings and service adjustments

Orange County officials announced on May 4 that all county administrative offices will be closed on Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day. The announcement includes changes to several public services during the holiday.

The closure affects a range of county operations, including solid waste management, library branches, and animal services. Curbside recycling collection will not take place on Memorial Day and will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week. The Solid Waste Administrative Office, Orange County Landfill, and Waste and Recycling Centers will also be closed on Monday but will operate as usual over the preceding weekend.

Library locations across Orange County are scheduled to close for Memorial Day but plan to maintain regular hours on Saturday and Sunday prior to the holiday. Animal Services facilities will observe similar closures, remaining open during their standard Saturday hours but closed both Sunday and Monday.

Emergency services in Orange County remain available at all times throughout the holiday period.

In related education data for Orange County school districts during the 2022-23 school year, 49.2% of senior students taking the science portion of the ACT were considered ready for college according to state education officials. For junior students taking science ACTs in that same period, readiness was measured at 50.7% according to state education officials. In reading proficiency among seniors taking the ACT reading portion, 56.1% were deemed college-ready according to state education officials, while juniors reached a rate of 55% according to state education officials. Math readiness rates were lower: among seniors it was reported at 46.1%, with juniors showing a similar figure at 45.1% according to state education officials.

Normal operating schedules for all affected county departments are set to resume Tuesday following Memorial Day.
