Orange County Government has announced its schedule for the Thanksgiving holiday week. County offices will be closed on Thursday and Friday, November 27-28, 2025.
There are some exceptions to these closures. Recycling collection that would normally occur on Thursday, November 27, will instead take place on Friday, November 28. Collections scheduled for Friday will move to Saturday, November 29. Residents are asked to have their carts out by 7 a.m. The Orange County Landfill and Waste & Recycling Centers will not operate on Thursday but will reopen on Friday. The Administrative Office for Solid Waste will remain closed both days.
Animal Services will open on Saturday, November 29. The department is usually closed Sundays and reminds residents to call 9-1-1 for animal-related emergencies when offices are shut, such as incidents involving animal bites or possible rabies exposure.
Emergency services through 9-1-1 will continue as usual during the holiday period. Officials urge residents to use this number only in true emergencies.
The Orange County Public Library and its Southern Branch in Carrboro plan to close early at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 26. Both locations will be closed Thursday and Friday but resume regular hours over the weekend.
County operations are expected to return to their normal schedule starting Monday, December 1.
Recent educational data shows that about half of Orange County high school students demonstrated college readiness in ACT subject tests during the last academic year. For example, among senior students taking the science portion of the ACT in local districts, nearly half were considered ready for college-level work according to results from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (https://www.dpi.nc.gov/). Similar trends were observed among juniors and across reading and math sections (https://www.dpi.nc.gov/).
