Four new members sworn into office on Hillsborough Town Board

Vote4

Robb English has been appointed to fill a vacant seat on the Hillsborough Town Board.

The 51-year-old Chapel Hill athletic supervisor will fill a seat left vacant after a recent election, reports The News & Observer. He has been on the Hillsborough Parks and Recreation Advisory Board for several years and lives in Cornwallis Hills.

“I’m truly appreciative and honored to have been appointed to serve as a commissioner,” English was quoted in a News & Observer article. “I want to thank the current board and mayor for the opportunity and I look forward to serving the residents of Hillsborough as a commissioner.”

English will fill the seat previously held by Jennifer Weaver, who was elected last month to be the town's new mayor. Weaver's term for the town board seat will expire in 2021.

The town board voted on Nov. 25 to appoint English to finish out Weaver's term, since the town did not have the authority to hold a special election, according to the article. English was chosen from a group of six candidates. He said in his application that he wanted to prioritize bike and pedestrian connections, affordable housing and growth of southern Hillsborough.

“I believe affordable housing is a critical issue for the town board to continue to address now and in the near future,” English said, according to the article. “Too many of our longtime Hillsborough residents on fixed incomes are finding it challenging to afford to live in town, and many new residents are finding limited opportunities for affordable housing.”

There are three other newly reelected members on the town board. Like English, Matt Hughes, Mark Bell and Evelyn Lloyd all took their oath of office on Dec. 9.
