North Carolina public television and radio received $6,838,983, the 19th highest amount by state, plus Washington, D.C., in the nation in 2018, a nonprofit said.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which oversees the federal government’s expenditures for public TV, radio and related media outlets, allocates the federal budget. The federal funding through the CPB is the largest source of funding for the stations.

The funding equates to $1.35 per taxpayer per year nationally. The CPB said there are almost 1,500 locally owned public TV and radio stations in the U.S. The CPB is a private, nonprofit corporation.

UNC TV, the statewide public TV network, has over-the-air channels in Asheville, Canton/Waynesville, Chapel Hill/Raleigh/Durham, Charlotte/Concord, Edenton/Columbia, Greenville, Jacksonville, Linville, Lumberton, Roanoke Rapids, Wilmington and Winston-Salem.

The N.C. Public Radio Association has 16 stations with a mix of news, music and arts programming.
