Orange County students and teachers are getting into the groove of remote learning while district buildings remain closed because of COVID-19.

The district provided Orange County students in fourth through 12th grade with laptops in March to support remote learning.

Cedar Ridge science teacher Jamye Carr told WNCN in a March 19 report that she contacted her students through email, Google Voice or Zoom, a video conferencing tool.

“I clocked in at 7:30 a.m. this morning and since then, I’ve been answering student emails and fielding phone calls,” Carr said.

The science teacher uses Canvas, an online education tool, to upload her students' assignments. She said remote learning is off to a good start but anticipates some challenges.

“The biggest challenge is getting to those students who weren’t motivated in class and who have kind of checked out because they are not in class,” Carr said. “So I don’t have a way to use that proximity to motivate them.”

Orange County Schools will continue remote learning through at least Monday, April 6.
