The University of North Carolina system intends to return prorated housing and dining payments to thousands of students as the state responds to COVID-19.

UNC students forced off campus by the pandemic will receive a refund of unused housing and dining payments, according to UNC interim President Bill Roper.

Roper said in a statement that it is the system’s commitment to students and parents “to get this done as quickly as possible.”

“It is also our obligation to get this done right. We hope to be able to announce specifics for processing and issuing refunds in the upcoming weeks.”

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services reported 3,426 positive COVID-19 cases in 90 counties as of April 8. The department also reported 53 deaths.

More than 90%of classes at UNC’s 17 campuses are now online. Approximately 5% of the 65,000 students formerly living on campuses remain because of special circumstances, Roper said.
