Many projects have been stalled because of the COVID-19 public health crisis, but the construction of a new Wegmans Food Markets grocery store in Chapel Hill continues to move forward.

The framework of the new store on Old Durham Road is now visible, Chapelboro.com reported on May 17.

The new Wegmans store is a $30-million project that was originally approved in 2017, the website reported. Wegmans anticipated the grocery store to open in 2020, but a date is unclear at this time as the state continues to deal with the fallout from COVID-19.

Chapel Hill held a public hearing in March on traffic improvements needed to accommodate the new store such as electronic signs that display the speed motorists are traveling, “No through truck traffic” signs and other “traffic calming” measures, according to Chapelboro.com.

The 130,000-square-feet store will be located at the former AutoMall location on the east side of US 15-501 at Fordham Boulevard, according to Chapelboro.com.
