Wipdhag9tww2uujubgbd7lz0zg0umuo4

Town of Hillsborough issued the following announcement on May 29.

The Hillsborough Tree Board and Hillsborough Garden Club invite everyone to participate in a weeklong, mostly virtual event celebrating Pollinator Week starting Sunday, May 31.

The Hillsborough Garden Club has gathered resources and fun activities to explore each day for those who are enthusiastic or curious about pollinators. Visit www.hillsboroughgardenclubnc.org to get started. The content and activities are child-friendly. Download a bee coloring page to decorate and post in your window for others to spot. Take a photo of a pollinator in your garden or around town and upload it to the Garden Club’s Facebook page. Pose questions using the Garden Club’s Ask Us feature. And pick up free wildflower seeds at:

  • Gro-Smart, 250 South Churton Street, Hillsborough.
  • Farm and Garden, 3517 N.C. 86 N., Hillsborough.
  • Windsong Pollinator Garden, 1401 Overlook Lane, Hillsborough.
The pollinator gardens in the town’s community parks are in full bloom. The pollinator garden in Cates Creek, 1445 Cates Creek Parkway, is located between the parking lot and playground. The pollinator garden at Gold Park, 415 Dimmock Mills Road, is located between the field and the train trestle and is also home to the town’s bee hotel.

The national nonprofit organization Bee City USA has recognized Hillsborough's work to reverse pollinator declines. As a designated Bee City, the town works to help raise awareness of the role pollinators play in sustaining more than 75% of the world’s plant species and to help expand pollinator-friendly practices and environments in town. The Hillsborough Garden Club, which suggested that the town seek Bee City USA status, works in partnership with the town Public Space Division and Tree Board on developing the program and educational materials. Visit the Bee City USA page on the town’s website for more information.
