Town of Hillsborough issued the following announcement on June 8.
Law enforcement leaders in Orange County have issued a joint video statement on their commitment to serve, noting together, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
In the video, Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood and the police chiefs of the Carrboro, Chapel Hill, Hillsborough, Mebane and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill police departments state they made the video as law enforcement officers, community members and human beings upset about systemic racism.
They invite community members to get to know them beyond their badges, guns and handcuffs, inviting people to read their webpages, follow their social media and meet with them to share concerns and to learn about the work the law enforcement agencies have been doing to build trust within the county’s communities.
On June 1, Hillsborough Police Chief Duane Hampton issued a letter to the community in response to the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on May 25. The letter includes information on the Hillsborough Police Department’s hiring and selection of officers, training, and use of force among other topics.
