Town of Hillsborough issued the following announcement on June 29.
A gathering celebrating Independence Day and a march and rally in support of the Black Lives Matter movement are planned in the downtown area in coming days.
Neither event is sponsored by the town, which is not currently issuing special event permits due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The events are considered First Amendment-protected free speech.
The Independence Day commemoration is expected to draw about 50-60 people to the lawn of the Old Orange County Courthouse 11 a.m.-noon on Saturday, July 4. Organizers plan to have speakers, singing of patriotic songs and voter registration.
The Black Lives Matter march and rally are planned to take place 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7. Organizers plan to march from First Baptist Church, 201 W. King St., east on King Street to the Old Orange County Courthouse for the rally. Traffic on King and Churton streets may be briefly disrupted.
