Town of Carrboro issued the following announcement on July 23.
Mayor Lydia Lavelle has proclaimed Sunday, July 26, 2020, as “Americans with Disabilities Act Day” in the Town of Carrboro.
“I encourage all residents to celebrate the positive changes brought about by the ADA, to reaffirm our commitment to accessibility and inclusiveness, and to build a space where each individual can use their talents, capabilities and passions for the betterment of the entire community,” Mayor Lavelle said.
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law by President George H. W. Bush on July 26, 1990, after being approved in overwhelming and bipartisan votes by both the House and the Senate.
2020 marks the 30th anniversary of the ADA; known as “ADA30” and centered on the theme of “Increasing Access and Opportunity.” This anniversary will be celebrated by people and organizations throughout the country to honor the successes of the past 30 years, to reflect on the realities we face today, and to look toward the future with a commitment to fully realizing the goals of this landmark legislation.
