The spring 2021 semester at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill will start two weeks later than initially planned.
UNC chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz said classes would start on Jan. 19 to permit the most time attainable for a break between the two semesters, WRAL reported on Oct. 8, and allow administrators and staff to plan.
It is unclear whether classes will be in-person or online next semester, WRAL reported.
The Chapel Hill administration will continue to let the 1,000 students who live on campus to do so in the spring semester, WRAL reported, however, no decision has been made about adding more students.
If UNC permits more students to live on campus, the residence halls will likely have a different look and feel, WRAL reported. Guskiewicz acknowledged that many dormitories are configured differently.
“Some have outdoor hallways that connect rooms as opposed to internal hallways that we saw a greater spread of the virus in,” the chancellor told WRAL.
A delayed spring semester will also mean a delayed spring commencement.
