CHAPEL HILL-CARRBORO CITY SCHOOLS: Superintendent's Update - Happy New School Year!

Update

Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools issued the following announcement on Aug. 22.

Happy NEW School Year, CHCCS Family!!!! Can you sense the excitement? In all my years of public education, I have never been more eager to kick off a new school year. Monday can’t get here quick enough.

The Year That Was…

However, before we begin the new school year, I invite you to take a look at some of the highlights of the previous year. The 2020-21 school year was like none other. While it had its challenges, there were also quite a few behind-the-scenes victories. We created a six-minute video that commemorates just a few of these success stories - as told by those who made it happen. It will give you chills. You can see in the link below. Please take a few minutes to check it out.

Alternative Learning Arrangement (ALA)

As you probably know, at last night’s meeting [August 19], our Board of Education unanimously approved a recommendation brought forth by our staff to create an alternative learning arrangement for families of students in grades K-8 who self-identify as high-risk for COVID-19. There are a lot of factors to consider in order to make this work. In fact, too many to include in this update. However, you can see the abstract (link below) with all available details at this time. It may contain more information than you want to know, but you also access the powerpoint (link below) that also includes information about our return to school protocols.

The next step for us is to find out how many families are interested in this option. To that end, a survey is being sent out to all K-8 families. Please be sure to respond no later than next Friday, August 27 at 5 p.m. should you be interested in an alternative learning arrangement for your child.

If/Then Quarantine Protocols Chart

Many have asked to see specific scenarios regarding student and staff quarantines, and how decisions will be made in the coming school year. While all quarantine judgments will be made at the discretion of the Orange County Health Department, in collaboration with our CHCCS school health nurses, I found the chart included in this document (link below) to be especially helpful. I apologize again for the amount of information we continue to send your way, but I know this has been a big question for many of our staff and families.

Finally, I want to conclude this week’s update by sending out a welcome to our new Chief Communications Officer. Andy Jenks, of Henrico County Public Schools, was approved at last night’s meeting and will be joining us soon. He is an experienced school communicator, and I am confident you will enjoy what Andy brings to our district and our community.

My children are counting down the hours until they get to burst through the doors of their schools and meet their teachers and some new friends. And I am so excited, I can’t wait to visit every school next week to see our students and staff in action . . . it’s go time! Get some rest this weekend, if you can.

Dr. Nyah Hamlett
