Alamance Community College issued the following announcement on Oct. 15.
Carrie Russell, an instructor in Academic and Career Readiness at Alamance Community College, is among five candidates statewide selected by the U.S. Department of Education to receive training as Teaching Skills That Matter (TSTM) educators.
The Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education (OCTAE) recently designated North Carolina as a Teaching Skills That Matter (TSTM) state. ACC’s Carrie Russell, along with four other North Carolina instructors, will matriculate through TSTM’s Cohort 4 during program year 2021-2022.
Russell and her four fellow educators will participate in the TSTM training from October 2021 through April 2022. Upon completion of the training, the five participating instructors will be considered “Train-the-Trainers” and will duplicate the TSTM training and present it for instructors throughout North Carolina during program year 2022-2023.
Russell was named 2021 Workforce Development Instructor of the Year by Alamance Community College last spring. As the College’s High School Equivalency Online instructor in the Academic and Career Readiness (ACR) department, she also serves as the professional development facilitator for the ACR program. Russell has a Bachelor of Science degree from Wingate University in Elementary Education and a Masters in Library and Information Studies from UNCG. She taught second grade and was a media specialist in the Alamance-Burlington School System before becoming a full-time mom. Carrie began teaching in the Academic and Career Readiness program in 2011.
“Education has always been an important part of my life. I was ‘that’ kid who loved school, I never grew tired of learning,” said Russell. “It is an honor to have been chosen to participate in the Teaching Skills That Matter Cohort. What better thing than to learn how to target the skills that matter for our adult learners and then share those with other educators. I never want to forget what it feels like to be a student, and can’t wait to represent ACC in the TSTM Cohort.”
