CHAPEL HILL-CARRBORO CITY SCHOOLS: October Is Cybersecurity Awareness Month

Cybersecurity

Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools issued the following announcement on Oct. 22.

Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools recognizes and teaches the importance of being safe while on the internet.  Understanding how connected people are throughout their lives, how technology is a part of everyday communication, and how people access services through technology is essential for everyone.

As part of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, CHCCS is a 2021 Champion Organization with the National CyberSecurity Alliance.  The Champions Program is a collaborative effort among businesses, government agencies, colleges and universities, associations, nonprofit organizations and individuals who are committed to Cybersecurity Awareness and its focus of "Do Your Part. #BeCyberSmart."

CHCCS begins to teach its students in elementary school how to be good digital citizens.

"Everyone in our district, whether they're a staff member, a student, a parent or a community member, needs to make sure they're safe when they're using technology," said IT Security Specialist Lara Farrar.  "Cybersecurity is so much more than not sharing your password.  It's knowing when we help educate others on the importance of being cybersecure, we all benefit.  It's being continuously vigilant when it comes to using technology safely.  And it's helping others to know what good, safe decisions are when using any technology."

This year, Cybersecurity Awareness Month has been divided up to focus on specific themes over four weeks.  Week One is understanding and implementing basic cyber hygiene, like strong passwords and multi-factor authentication.  Week Two is recognizing and reporting phishing attempts.  Week Three is empowering individuals to practice safe online behavior, as well as considering careers in cybersecurity.  Week Four focuses on making cybersecurity a priority for those who design technology.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month began in 2004 with the goal of raising awareness and engaging and educating public- and private-sector partners.  For more information about Cybersecurity Month, please click here.
