ALAMANCE COMMUNITY COLLEGE: Breaks Ground on New Student Services Center; Building Will Open in Fall 2022

Groundbreaking

Alamance Community College issued the following announcement on Oct. 28.

Alamance Community College held a groundbreaking ceremony on October 22 to celebrate the upcoming construction phase for a new $6.7 million Student Services Building.

College administrators, public officials, and business leaders attended the in-person ceremony while observing social distancing rules. The public had an opportunity to view the event via a live stream.

The Student Services Center, a free-standing 12,203 square foot structure, will relocate and enhances space for Admissions, Registrar’s Office, Financial Aid, Student Payments, and the Office of the Vice President for Student Success. Included also will be a ground floor multipurpose space that can be subdivided into three meeting areas by use of sliding partitions. Upon completion, it will serve as the new entrance to the campus core facing Jimmie Kerr Road.

“Today’s celebration is another historic milestone for a dream long in the making,” said ACC President Dr. Algie Gatewood. “This groundbreaking ceremony serves as a reminder of what a community college is all about: Access. Hope. Opportunity. Jobs…Our goal in constructing this building is to make enrolling, receiving help applying for financial aid, and paying for college seamless by removing barriers and providing these services in a single location.

“Many of ACC’s students are first-generation college students who may need guidance through the admissions and registration process,” said Dr. Roslyn Crisp, Board of Trustees Chair in prepared remarks. “The Center will be a guidepost for these and all students, providing access to services that will change the trajectory of their lives.

An invited crowd of dignitaries, elected officials, and college personnel listened to an array of speakers, including:

  • Algie Gatewood, President of Alamance Community College
  • Roslyn Crisp, Chair of Alamance Community College Board of Trustees
  • John Paisley, Chair of Alamance Co. Board of Commissioners
  • Thomas Stith III, President of NC Community College System
  • Ricky Hurtado, NC State Representative, District 63
  • Dennis Riddell, NC State Representative, District 64
  • Amy Galey, NC State Senator, District 24
  • Gary Hubler, The FWA Group Architects Principal
  • Elizabeth Brehler, Director of Enrollment Management
  • Ruth Mann, Career and College Promise Student
The event concluded with the ceremonial groundbreaking as several groups of dignitaries donned construction helmets and pitched dirt with gold-plated shovels.

The Student Services Building will open to assist students in fall 2022.
