TOWN OF HILLSBOROUGH: Volunteers Needed to Serve on Appointed Boards

Volunteering

Town of Hillsborough issued the following announcement on Nov. 1.

Interested in offering your time and insight to a Hillsborough board? Several boards need volunteers. All boards are holding virtual meetings while North Carolina remains under a state of emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Historic District Commission

The Historic District Commission is seeking qualified candidates to fill one vacancy.

Applicants must reside in the Hillsborough zoning jurisdiction, either inside the town limits or in the extraterritorial jurisdiction. Residence in the Historic District is not required. Applicants should have an interest in preserving and protecting Hillsborough’s historic resources and should have demonstrated knowledge in historic preservation, architecture, planning, history, archaeology or related fields.

Meetings are at 6:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month with occasional special meetings and additional training sessions as required. For more information on the Historic District Commission, contact Planning and Economic Development Manager Shannan Campbell by email or by phone at 919-296-9477 or visit the commission’s page on the town website.

Tourism Board

The Tourism Board has two vacancies. One is for an at-large member, who should reside within the town, own property within the town or have a principal place of employment within the town. The other vacancy is for someone who owns or operates a restaurant or other business that collects and remits the prepared food and beverage tax.

The Tourism Board drives economic development by promoting travel, tourism and visitor services. It sponsors programs and activities designed to improve Hillsborough's attractiveness to visitors. To accomplish this, the board reinvests the town's prepared food and beverage tax in funding for grants, special projects and partnerships, and contract services.

Meetings are at 5:30 p.m. the first Monday of the month. For more information, contact Planning and Economic Development Manager Shannan Campbell by email or by phone at 919-296-9477.

Water and Sewer Advisory Committee

The Water and Sewer Advisory Committee is seeking to fill one seat designated for an in-town water customer. Half the board seats are designated for in-town water customers, and half are for out-of-town customers.

The Water and Sewer Advisory Committee is responsible for making recommendations related to management of the Water and Sewer Fund. Recommendations address areas such as public information, operations and finances. As part of this responsibility, the committee receives updates and requests information from staff to stay informed.

The committee seeks diversity in its membership to include representation from residential, commercial and institutional customers. The committee member term is four years. Applicants from new neighborhoods also are encouraged to apply.

The committee meets at 7 p.m. the first Thursday of the month. See the Water and Sewer Advisory Committee page on the town website.
