Town of Hillsborough issued the following announcement on Oct. 28.
Work on a utility project at the intersection of South Churton and John Earl streets has been delayed for the remainder of this week (the week of Oct. 25), and the traffic changes now are expected to occur Nov. 1-3.
The work is expected between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., and part of the intersection at John Earl and South Churton streets will be closed:
- John Earl Street will not be accessible from South Churton Street.
- Mayo Street will be available as a detour to approach businesses along John Earl Street from the western end of John Earl Street.
- Vehicles on John Earl Street will be able to only turn right onto South Churton Street’s southbound lane.
- Avoid the area if possible.
- Detour along Mayo Street or Orange Grove Road.
- Watch for stopped traffic.
- Keep work safety in mind when traveling by the work site.
Pipeline Utilities, based in Raleigh, has been working to connect two water mains in four points along South Churton Street/Old N.C. 86 for the town. The project began in late May for expected interconnection of mains near John Earl Street, Mayo Street, Oakdale Drive and Waterstone Drive. Weather, material supplies and challenges at each site have caused more traffic control, schedule changes and completion delays.
The Nov. 1-3 work is expected to be the final major disruption to traffic connected with this project. Most of the excavation is being performed outside of the roadway, and most traffic delays will occur between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays unless otherwise noted.
The project will provide redundancy in the town’s water system and improve water quality by circulating water through both pipes, achieving a better turnover without assisted main flushing. It is expected to cost $439,000. The town appreciates the public’s patience with the temporary inconvenience.
