TOWN OF HILLSBOROUGH: Community Survey Results Show Overall Satisfaction

Surveycom

Town of Hillsborough issued the following announcement on Mar. 28.

The results of the Town of Hillsborough’s community survey are available for review and show broad satisfaction with the overall quality of life and services in Hillsborough.

Just over 500 residents completed the survey, which was mailed to all Hillsborough households in November and was available online until early January. Respondents represented the population of the town in race, ethnicity, age and gender, with good geographic representation. The results show that 95% of respondents rate Hillsborough as an excellent or good place to live and that 88% are satisfied or very satisfied with the overall quality of services provided by the town.

“As a board and town, we should always be mindful of where concerns lie and where we need to improve, but the overall message of the community survey is clear: People love this town, love living and working here, and think the town is doing a good job providing services,” Mayor Jenn Weaver said. “I know my fellow board members and I place tremendous credit for this with our amazing employees. They do a great job, and it shows in how pleased the community is with their work.”

Benchmarking data shows the town rated higher than the U.S. average for communities with populations under 30,000 in all 46 areas assessed, rating significantly higher (more than 5%) in 45 of the areas. In the Atlantic Region, it rated above the average for 45 of the 46 areas, rating the same for a place to work.

Areas of focus

Respondents indicated the top three areas they want to see the town focus on for the next two years are:

  • Maintenance of town streets
  • Quality of water and sewer services
  • Condition of sidewalks
The town repaves about 5% of town-maintained streets each year, following a replacement schedule of about every 20 years for roadways. Most municipalities operate on a longer cycle, replacing streets every 30 to 50 years. See a video on the town’s street resurfacing program. Also, several streets within town are maintained by the North Carolina Department of Transportation, which is responsible for pavement, curb and gutter repairs; signs; and snow removal. A listing of state-maintained roadways is available, along with NCDOT contact information, on the Street Maintenance page of the town website.

The Hillsborough Water and Sewer Advisory Committee meets at 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month. Meetings are virtual until appointed boards resume meeting in person. In-person meetings are held in the Board Meeting Room of the Town Hall Annex, 105 E. Corbin St. The meetings are open to the public, and the agenda can be found each month on the town calendar, available by scrolling to the bottom of the town’s homepage.

Public Works inventories and makes regular repairs to town-maintained sidewalks. Sidewalks are required to accompany new construction of houses and most businesses. The town has long-term plans to add sidewalks where feasible. See the Community Connectivity Plan below for details.
