TOWN OF HILLSBOROUGH: Dispose of Unneeded Prescription and Other Drugs

Medicines

Town of Hillsborough issued the following announcement on Apr. 19.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is April 30, and Hillsborough officers will be hosting a take-back event in town.

Gather your unwanted, unneeded or expired medication and safely dispose of it at the event — from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 30 at Walgreens, 200 U.S. 70 E. Bring any of the following:

  • Expired and unused medication.
  • Prescription and over-the-counter pills.
  • Vitamins, ointments and patches.
Do not bring cancer drugs or needles.

The Federal Drug Administration advises taking advantage of local take-back programs as safe disposal methods vary widely by drug. Flushing drugs down the toilet or improperly disposing of them with garbage can present safety and health hazards

Year-round drop box

Did you know the Hillsborough Police Department has a year-round drop box for unused medications? The drop box is in the police station lobby, 127 N. Churton St., and will be accessible from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays when town offices reopen to the public. Use these guidelines for the Police Department drop box:

  • Pill medications must be in original containers or a sealable bag.
  • Liquid medications and needles are not accepted.
The permanent drop box is intended to prevent drug abuse and addiction by reducing the amount of excess medication in the community.
