CHAPEL HILL-CARRBORO CITY SCHOOLS: Honoring CHCCS School Nurses

Nursehosp

Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools issued the following announcement on May 12.

An excerpt from Superintendent Nyah Hamlett's Community Update:

"May is not only the month of so many “official” recognitions, but it’s also a month when numerous end-of-year meetings take place that include expressions of gratitude, sometimes with food and small tokens wrapped in. I had the pleasure of attending part of one such meeting yesterday, the School Health Nurse Appreciation breakfast hosted by our amazing Lead for School Health & Homebound Services, Tracy Sanders. You could tell right away it was a gathering of healthcare professionals and the generous breakfast spread was nutritious (and not loaded with pastries)! This is a team of 22 professionals, some of whom have been with CHCCS for years, others who have joined the district more recently. I felt it was so important to take the time to thank each and every one of them in person for their invaluable, tireless work over the past year and through the pandemic. Most can imagine some of the ways their workloads have expanded since early 2020, but few may understand all of what their daily tasks and duties now require.

Of course they spend time with sick students, as they always have, and not just those with Covid or suspected cases, but with newly diagnosed diabetics, students with asthma and other chronic illnesses, food allergies and more. They identify and address a range of mental health issues. They’ve helped educate students, parents and staff about COVID-19; how to minimize its spread and seek testing and treatment options. They not only continue to write care plans for some of our students with complex conditions, but they have been collecting data, writing or revising policies, filing school reports of case counts, and communicating with the School Support and Wellness Team at Lincoln Center and representatives at the Orange County Health Department. In spite of these overwhelming responsibilities, they are often the people in our schools who students and staff seek out when they need a friendly voice or a calming reassurance. In more ways than I could name, they have modeled grace, grit and resilience through these difficult times. Thanks to their commitment and expertise, our students and staff can feel and be safe in our schools, our teachers can teach, and our students can learn. We are blessed to have a nurse in every one of our schools, unlike so many districts in this state and country."
