Town of Hillsborough issued the following announcement on May 30.
If you’ve been in Hillsborough at the end of May, you know the town typically observes the Memorial Day holiday by flying the United States flag in the downtown area.
That won’t happen this year. Duke Energy no longer permits single-pole flags on its utility poles.
The power company approved an agreement earlier this month for decorative banners that can be attached to utility poles through two pole arms. And last week, a Duke Energy contractor approved pole locations for the banners. The town is in the process of ordering banners in four designs that include the United States, North Carolina and pride flags. A fourth design will replace the town's current welcome banner.
The new banners will be installed this summer for holiday and other observances when they are available. The town will display American and state flag banners for certain holidays, a pride flag banner for most of June for Pride Month, and a welcome banner the rest of the year.
“The new banners will be beautiful and worth the wait,” Hillsborough Mayor Jenn Weaver said. “I am thankful to all of our staff working behind the scenes to get everything in place as soon as possible.”
To meet spacing requirements imposed by Duke Energy and the North Carolina Department of Transportation, some banners will be placed on the back side of power poles over sidewalks to provide adequate clearance on the roadway side.
Possible locations for banners in commercial areas outside of the downtown will be explored at a later time as power poles in some areas are located farther from the roadway and likely will require larger banners and hardware for an appropriate scale.
