TOWN OF CHAPEL HILL POLICE DEPARTMENT: Scam Alert

Town of Chapel Hill Police Department issued the following announcement on June 28.

A scammer is calling community members, claiming to be a Chapel Hill Police Officer. The caller says there are bench warrants out, demands that the victim remain on the phone, then asks for money. In these cases, the caller ID says the call is coming from our Police Department’s main number – but it is not.

The Chapel Hill Police Department never asks for money over the phone. Make sure your older loved ones and neighbors know this.

If you receive a call like this, hang up. You can always call our main number (919) 968-2760 if you have concerns about a call like this and need to speak directly with Police Department staff.
