North Carolina Central University issued the following announcement on July 1.

North Carolina Central University (NCCU) has appointed Dr. Malik Edwards interim dean, School of Law, effective July 5, 2022. Edwards will report to provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs, Dr. David H. Jackson, Jr.

Edwards previously served as associate dean for Faculty Affairs and Scholarly Enrichment and John D. Fassett Professor of Law at the NCCU School of Law. He is an interdisciplinary scholar whose work explores the use of social and systemic supports to understand racial disparities and to develop remedies to address these disparities.

Edwards will serve as the unit’s chief academic officer and he will be providing administrative oversight for all aspects of academic life within the school, including fiscal management, personnel professional development, academic programs and student enrollment. He will also direct external initiatives that include community outreach and development and fundraising.

His scholarship has included law review articles, peer-reviewed journals, and book chapters that explore the use of social science evidence in equity contexts. Edwards connects his scholarship to his teaching of Constitutional Law, Property, Administrative Law, and Education Law.

Edwards is committed to increasing minority representation in the legal profession through collaborations across NCCU’s campus and among Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). He has been successful in gaining extramural funding to support NCCU School of Law’s pipeline efforts. As principal investigator, he helped NCCU become the first HBCU to receive a Law School Admission Council PLUS grant. Edwards has worked with units across NCCU’s campus on Title III and HBCU - Undergraduate Program (HBCU-UP) grants.

Edwards received a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education in the Education Policy Program and a J.D. from New York University School of Law.  A competitive national search will begin immediately to identify the next dean.

Please welcome Dr. Malik Edwards to his new interim appointment!
