Town of Hillsborough issued the following announcement on Sept. 20.
The N.C. Department of Transportation will be closing a section of Interstate 85 South overnight to accommodate repairs to the N.C. 86 overpass.
Weather permitting, the interstate will be closed beneath the overpass 7 p.m.-7 a.m. Wednesday-Thursday, Sept. 21-22, and again 7 p.m.-7 a.m. Thursday-Friday, Sept. 22-23 to allow contractors to repair damaged beams.
During the closures, southbound traffic will detour through the N.C. 86 interchange and reenter the interstate on the other side of the overpass.
Daytime work to repair a damaged concrete pillar will require the ongoing closure of the right lane of Interstate 85 South near the overpass.
NCDOT officials estimate the overpass will reopen to traffic late this week or early next week. In the meantime, motorists using N.C. 86 should take U.S. 70A, Lawrence Road and Old N.C. 10 to travel around the closed area.
Drivers should remain alert, drive cautiously and slow down as they travel through the construction zone.
The overpass was damaged last week when a tractor trailer on the interstate crashed into it.
