COUNTY OF ORANGE: Lights it Up Green in Support of Veterans

County of Orange issued the following announcement on Nov. 7.

Orange County will illuminate several county buildings green this week as part of Operation Green Light, a new initiative between Orange County, the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners, the National Association of Counties and the National Association of County Veteran Service Officers.

Operation Green Light’s mission is to show support for veterans of all military conflicts, as well as raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by many veterans (and their families) and the resources that are available at the county, state, and federal level to assist veterans and their families.

“By shining the green light, we are raising awareness of the emotional, social and mental challenges that many military veterans encounter when returning home to civilian life, and we are expressing our gratitude for their sacrifices as well as our hope that they will receive the assistance they need," said Renee Price, Chair of the Orange County Board of Commissioners.  “Evidence suggests that veterans transitioning to post-military civilian life are at higher risk for suicide, and they often do not receive adequate support and resources. Individuals who have risked their lives fighting to protect our freedoms and our way of life deserve our support, and I encourage everyone to join with us in displaying a green light for our veterans and their families.”

Residents are encouraged to participate by simply changing one light bulb in their house to a green bulb. This can be an exterior light that neighbors and passersby see, or an interior light that sparks a conversation with friends. Shining a green light lets veterans know they are seen, appreciated and supported.

While this event is focused around the week of Veterans Day (Nov. 7-13), participants are encouraged to continue shining the light year-round and share their participation on social media using the hashtag #OperationGreenLight.

The following Orange County buildings will be lit green this week:

  • Bonnie B. Davis Environment and Agricultural Center
  • Historic Courthouse
  • Justice Center
  • Jerry M. Passmore Center
  • Main Library
  • Robert and Pearl Seymour Center
  • The Detention Center
  • Phillip " Nick" Waters Orange County Emergency Services Center
  • Welcome Center
  • Whitted Human Services Center
