Chapel Hill Poet Laureate Cortland Gilliam invites residents to engage with poetry and art during the town's month-long celebration of National Poetry Month in April. One of the highlights is the "Radical Imagining: A Youth Poetry Workshop" on April 20 at the Chapel Hill Public Library, catering to ages 13-18 with registration required. Another event is the "the poet is a verb" Local Poet Showcase & Open Mic Night on April 26, welcoming all ages for a free event with refreshments provided. Additionally, the Black Out Poetry Display at the Chapel Hill Public Library throughout April allows participants to create poems from found texts by crossing out words.
The Chapel Hill Public Library will be closed on Sunday, March 31, with the last day to sign up for the Chapel Hill Pride Promenade and Juneteenth event being Monday, April 1. The Planning Commission meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 2, and on Saturday, April 6, there will be a screening of "The Reason I Jump" for Autism Acceptance Month at the Chapel Hill Public Library Meeting Room B.
Applications to participate in the Chapel Hill Pride Promenade and Juneteenth event on June 1 are open until April 1 at 11:59 p.m. Vendors, nonprofits, and food trucks are encouraged to apply online for the event. The film screening of "The Reason I Jump" aims to highlight the perspective of an Autistic person and will feature a panel discussion afterward.
Parents of young autistic children are encouraged to attend the film screening, and childcare will be provided. Free popcorn will also be available, and refreshments can be purchased at the B3 kiosk during the event.
Residents are urged to stay updated on event schedules and changes by referring to the Town of Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill Public Library, Community Arts & Culture, and Parks and Recreation calendars.
