Mayor of Chapel Hill Provides Updates on Affordable Housing, LUMO Rewrite, and Bond Referendum

Chapel Hill Community, Mayor Jess has delivered a message to the town, sharing updates on various important topics.

In celebration of Earth Day, Mayor Jess greeted the community with a cheerful "Happy Earth Day!" and proceeded to inform the residents about recent developments. Mayor Jess expressed, "Today, I wanted to share a success from last Wednesday night and make sure everyone is in the loop on two important topics coming forward this week."

One significant achievement highlighted by Mayor Jess was the approval of Longleaf Trace, an affordable housing project aimed at providing 42 – 60 dwellings for seniors aged 55 and above. Mayor Jess mentioned, "Last Wednesday, Town Council approved Longleaf Trace, a 100% affordable community."

Looking ahead, Mayor Jess mentioned that the Town Council will be discussing several important topics during their meeting on April 24, particularly focusing on the LUMO Rewrite initiative. Mayor Jess stated, "Council will be receiving an update and discussing several related topics during Wednesday, April 24th meeting."

Furthermore, Mayor Jess provided insights into an upcoming special work session on April 26, where the Council will continue discussions on a proposed bond referendum. Mayor Jess outlined key points from a previous discussion, including the Town's ability to issue bonds for larger projects without raising taxes and the option to wait until 2025 for the referendum. Mayor Jess emphasized, "The Town can issue up to $50 million in bonds for larger projects without raising taxes."

In closing, Mayor Jess encouraged community engagement by inviting residents to share their questions or comments on the ongoing developments. Mayor Jess reiterated, "Finally, as we make these important decisions, your voice is important, so please reach out with questions or comments."
