Chapel Hill Community,
Mayor Jess has addressed the community in a message regarding the recent special work session held by the Town Council to discuss important matters concerning the town's development. The Mayor highlighted the significance of bringing a bond referendum before voters to facilitate the financing of larger projects and the advantage of gaining public approval to borrow at lower interest rates.
During the meeting, the focus was on determining the timing of the bond referendum and how the allocated funds would be distributed across the organization. Mayor Jess confirmed that there is unanimous agreement to present the bond referendum to voters on the November 2024 ballot, with a proposed total issuance of $50.5 million, ensuring that taxes will not be raised. The referendum will give voters the opportunity to support allocating $44 million across various categories, with an additional $6.5 million urgently needed for police, fire, and parking expenses.
One of the key decisions made during the session was the unanimous agreement to allocate $15 million for the rebuilding of the town's two oldest fire stations. Mayor Jess emphasized the importance of this allocation, citing a previous assessment that identified the outdated and poor condition of several fire stations.
Furthermore, it was revealed that five council members have expressed interest in allocating $20 million for affordable housing, demonstrating a commitment to addressing the town's housing needs.
The Mayor announced that further discussions on the final bond package will take place on May 3rd, with the issue set to be discussed at the May 15th Town Council meeting, providing an opportunity for public input. For those interested in learning more about the proceedings, materials and a recording of the special work session can be accessed on the Town website.
In conclusion, Mayor Jess expressed the need for community involvement and encouraged residents to stay informed and engaged in the town's development processes.
Sincerely,
Mayor Jess
