Celebrations mark pride month kickoff; AEDs installed in town parks

As May concludes, the Town of Chapel Hill looks ahead to June and the official start of summer. This issue highlights Pride Month celebrations, new AED installations in town parks, and various community events.

Pride Month Celebrations

An array of Pride flags will line parts of Franklin St. throughout June to promote self-affirmation, dignity, equality, and visibility for the LGBTQIA+ community. Local events include:

- **Pride Promenade:** On Saturday, June 1 at 12 p.m., a march from Peace & Justice Plaza to 140 West will kick off Small Town Pride.

- **Think Outside the Box:** An 8-foot interactive art cube available at the Promenade throughout June.

- **LGBTQIA+ Booklists:** The Chapel Hill Public Library offers recommended reads for all ages to celebrate Pride Month.

David Putnam Named New Economic Development Director

Chapel Hill Town Manager Chris Blue has appointed David Putnam as the new Economic Development Director starting June 24, 2024. Manager Blue stated, “This is a key position for the Town and David stood out among a very competitive field of candidates.”

Affordable Housing and Community Connections Engage Residents

In May, Affordable Housing and Community Connections staff hosted Meet & Greets across public housing communities. Hundreds of residents participated in these events.

New AED Equipment in Parks

Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation have installed automated external defibrillators (AEDs) near athletic fields and courts in locations such as Cedar Falls Park and Southern Community Park.

Guardians of the Hill Run for Special Olympics NC

Earlier this week, Guardians of the Hill participated in the Law Enforcement Torch Run with Special Olympics NC athletes. This event spans North Carolina to light the cauldron at the Special Olympics Summer Games.

Temporary Traffic Garden at Estes Hills

A temporary traffic garden has been established through collaboration with Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, Estes Hills Elementary, and Safe Routes to School Program. It aims to teach children road rules safely.

Design Workshop for Greene Tract Master Plan

An interactive design workshop for feedback on the Greene Tract Master Plan will be held on June 9. Interested parties are encouraged to register.

Local Government Expo

The first-ever Local Government Expo will be held on June 8 at NC State McKimmon Center in Raleigh. Over 40 local governments will spotlight careers across various fields.

LUMO Updates

Updates on land use rules (LUMO) can be found on a new website detailing planning basics and upcoming meetings.

Hurricane Season Preparedness

Residents are reminded to make plans, build kits, stay informed, and sign up for OC Alerts as hurricane season begins.

Council Meeting on June 5

The Council’s regular meeting will take place on June 5 at Chapel Hill Town Hall Council Chamber where they will consider adopting the 2024/2025 budget.

National Trails Day Celebration

On June 1 from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m., Friends of Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation invite trail enthusiasts to join a guided walk along Bolin Creek Trail in celebration of National Trails Day.

Basketball Courts Closed for Renovations

The Nate Davis Sr. Gym is closed until June 7 for new basketball goals installation. Residents are encouraged to sign up for competitive basketball programs over summer using these facilities once reopened.

Summer Blast at Chapel Hill Public Library

Starting June 1, Chapel Hill Public Library launches its Summer Blast program featuring concerts, movie screenings, reading challenges with free books and prizes aimed at sparking creativity through reading.

Juneteenth Celebration

A Juneteenth celebration will take place at Hargraves Community Center on Sunday, June 16 from 2 p.m. - 6 p.m., featuring live performances, oral histories, local businesses exhibits, kids' activities, and food trucks.

Chapel Hill Transit Logo Design Competition

Chapel Hill Transit invites everyone to participate in designing a logo for its upcoming 50th anniversary celebrations by July 5th deadline with selected designs featured across various platforms including buses and posters.
