Chapel Hill council adopts budget; proclaims Pride and Gun Violence Awareness months

The Chapel Hill Town Council convened on Wednesday, June 5, at 6:00 pm at the Chapel Hill Town Hall for a business meeting. The full agenda and meeting minutes are available on the Town’s website. Key highlights from the meeting include:

Pride Month Proclamation

The Council declared June as LGBTQ+ Pride Month in Chapel Hill. Mayor Jess Anderson read the proclamation, which was accepted by members of the Town’s LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group. The Council reaffirmed its opposition to discrimination, prejudice, homophobia, and transphobia while celebrating the contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals to the community.

Gun Violence Awareness Month Proclamation

June was also proclaimed Gun Violence Awareness Month in Chapel Hill. Council Member Melissa McCullough read the proclamation, with Elizabeth Hoane accepting it on behalf of Moms Demand Action Against Gun Violence. The Council renewed its commitment to reducing gun violence and promoting responsible gun ownership to enhance child safety.

2024-2025 Annual Budget Adoption

The Council unanimously voted (7-0) to adopt an annual budget for fiscal year 2024-2025 totaling $156,949,029, marking a 4% increase over the previous year. The budget includes a 2-cent property tax increase—1.5 cents allocated to the Town’s General Fund and 0.5 cents to the Transit Fund—raising the property tax rate to 59.2 cents. Budget priorities include employee recruitment and retention, high-quality core services, stewardship of facilities, fleet and infrastructure maintenance, and continued commitment to affordable housing.
