Chapel Hill announces summer events including Fourth of July celebrations

It’s officially summer. In this issue, find ways to beat the heat at the pool or library. Updates on the 828 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. site and free downtown parking next month are also provided. Additionally, save the date for the annual fireworks show at Southern Community Park.

Beat the Heat in Chapel Hill this Summer

As summer begins, there are numerous ways to stay cool:

- The A.D. Clark Pool is open for the season.

- The Library’s Summer Blast offers various free family programs.

- Greenways and trails provide shaded areas for biking, rolling, or strolling.

- The annual Fourth of July fireworks show will be held at Southern Community Park.

NCDEQ to Share Draft Brownfields Agreement, Open Public Comment Period for 828 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Site

The final stages of a Brownfields agreement for the 828 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. site are underway. This agreement will outline future property uses and remediation measures allowed by the NC Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ). A public comment period is expected from July 1 – 30, with details on accessing and commenting on the draft agreement to be shared soon by NCDEQ.

Celebrating Juneteenth

The community celebrated Juneteenth at Hargraves Community Center with family activities, music, stories, Black-owned businesses, and non-profits.

The Chapel Hill July 4th Celebration returns to Southern Community Park with festivities starting at 6 p.m., parking beginning at 7 p.m., and fireworks around 9 p.m.

Head Downtown on the Weekend in July - Parking is Free!

Town-operated parking in downtown Chapel Hill will be free on weekends in July.

Town's Food Distribution Shifts to Twice Monthly

Starting in July, food distributions will occur on the second and fourth Wednesdays each month: July 10 and July 24.

Stream Team Needs You

Applications are open for Stream Team members who will adopt creek sites and monitor them quarterly.

A ribbon-cutting was held for Estes Drive's new one-mile stretch of wider sidewalks and bike lanes separated from vehicle traffic.

Public Spaces Exhibit Series

Triangle artists aged 18+ can apply to display their work as part of Community Arts & Culture's Public Spaces indoor exhibition series by July 18 at 5 p.m.

New Road Work Schedule

Upcoming road works include:

- Estes Dr.: overnight paving starting June 24

- E. Rosemary St.: construction June21–22

- Dogwood Dr.: tree removal June24

- Ongoing work continues through August2 across several locations including Greenwood Rd., Fordham Blvd., Kings Mill Rd., Sourwood Dr.
