UNC celebrates athletic excellence at 2024 Rammy Awards

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill celebrated its annual Rammy Awards on Monday night, highlighting the achievements of its student-athletes over the past year. The event took place at Memorial Hall and featured a variety of performances and awards presentations.

The ceremony was hosted by JJ Jones from football, Bella Miller from gymnastics, Michael Spragley from men's cross country and track & field, and Alyssa Ustby from women's basketball. Jones opened the evening by stating, "Tonight, we're celebrating Carolina athletics and all you've accomplished over the past year."

Among the notable winners were Owen Duffy from men's lacrosse and Charly Bruder from field hockey, who were named Male and Female Newcomers of the Year. Drake Maye received the Best Play award for his left-handed touchdown pass during a game against Pitt.

Harrison Ingram from men's basketball and Skyler Smith from women's swimming & diving were recognized as Breakthrough Athletes. David Ford earned the Individual Performance award for his achievements in men's golf.

The Best Upset award went to the men's fencing team for their victory in the 2024 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship. Alyssa Ustby was honored with the Record-Breaking Performance award for recording a triple-double in women's basketball.

Parker Wolfe was acknowledged for his performance in men's track & field and cross country with the Best Championship Performance award. RJ Davis and Aranza Vazquez were named Outstanding Male and Female Athletes of the Year respectively.

Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham highlighted NCAA Championship wins by UNC's women's tennis and field hockey teams while introducing voting for Best Dressed Award winners Sydney Banks (women's track & field) and Conner Harrell (football).

Special awards included the John Lotz Award presented to Sam Forrest (women's lacrosse) and Patrick Anderson (men's cross country), recognizing their perseverance through personal challenges. Community service honors went to Reilly Tran (women's tennis), J.J. Jones (football), Kaimon Rucker (football), Dorrit Eisenbeis (field hockey), Gracie Bolick (women's track & field), and the men's lacrosse team.

The Mildred McCaskill Award was given to Avery Patterson (women's soccer) and Patrick Alvarez (baseball). The Unsung Hero Rammy recognized members of UNC’s mascot team.

Performances during the event included Ella Webb playing harp music, Abbey Forbes singing, and Spragley freestyling about UNC sports accomplishments before leading attendees in a call-and-response cheer.

As is tradition at UNC events, Hark the Sound concluded the evening before guests enjoyed ice cream outside Memorial Hall.
