Chapel Hill Review

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has reported improvements in its Academic Progress Rates (APR) for student-athletes. Released on Tuesday, the data shows that 20 of Carolina's teams have exceeded the national average in their respective sports over a four-year period. This includes baseball, men's and women's basketball, and football.

Carolina's single-year all-sport rate increased to 989, up two points from the previous year, while its four-year rate rose by one point to 991. This marks the third consecutive year and fifth time in seven years that UNC has achieved an all-sport multi-year rate of at least 990.

The NCAA uses APR scores to monitor academic performance among scholarship students who participate in varsity sports. The score evaluates eligibility and retention each semester, with a perfect score being 1000 and a minimum benchmark set at 930.

The latest figures reflect data from the 2022-23 school year, covering rates from the past four years starting in 2019-20. Women's fencing has consistently scored a perfect 1000 since tracking began in 2003-04. It is one of twelve Tar Heel teams achieving this score for the single-year rate of 2022-23 and one of six maintaining it over the most recent four years.

In addition to women's fencing, men's and women's basketball, women's cross country, men's and women's golf, men's and women's lacrosse, men's soccer, as well as men's and women's tennis all scored perfect marks for the year.

Teams such as men's and women's fencing, golf teams, women's swimming and diving along with tennis have sustained perfect scores over four years. These six teams plus football rank within the top ten percent nationally in their sports.

UNC's football team achieved a multi-year rate of 996—14 points higher than its previous record set last year—marking it as having the highest multi-year rate among ACC football teams and tying for third-highest within Power Five conferences.

Other notable performances include women’s basketball reaching a new high (995), men’s track recording its best multi-year rate again (990), while baseball matched its highest multi-year mark (989) for three consecutive years.

Women’s tennis scored perfectly for fourteen straight years; men’s golf maintained this streak for eight years. Men's basketball hit this milestone twice in three years; women’s basketball did so consecutively recently; cross country thrice continuously; men’s fencing reached it four times successively; women’s golf five out of six times recently; lacrosse achieved seven times over ten years; whereas men’s soccer netted perfection five out of six attempts lately.

Twenty-seven out of twenty-eight UNC teams recorded single-year rates above or equal to seventy-nine percent or more than nine hundred seventy each season respectively—and twenty-five registered eighty-two percent plus overall during these periods measured concurrently throughout multiple seasons altogether consistently across varying disciplines equally likewise uniformly accordingly thereby similarly correspondingly comparably equivalently analogously identically indistinguishably interchangeably homogeneously synchronously systematically congruently correspondingly commensurately
