Chapel Hill Review

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has achieved a notable second place in the 2024-25 Learfield Directors' Cup standings, following a successful fall semester marked by various athletic accomplishments. The women's soccer team's victory in their 23rd national championship stands out as the primary highlight.

UNC's seven fall sports contributed to the Director's Cup points, with women's soccer securing first place and earning 100 points. The Tar Heels accumulated a total of 397.50 points, coming behind Stanford, which leads with 413.00 points, and ahead of Virginia with 293.50 points.

Both UNC and Washington are unique among the top ten schools for scoring in every sport they sponsor during the fall season. This is only the third time that all Carolina fall sports have been eligible to contribute points towards the overall Director's Cup finish, previously occurring in the 2015-16 and 2021-22 seasons.

In addition to women's soccer, Carolina field hockey tied for third place contributing 83 points; men's cross country finished sixth (73.5 points); women's cross country placed eleventh (66); volleyball tied for seventeenth (50); men's soccer tied for thirty-third (25), while football awaits its point total pending its upcoming bowl game performance.

Led by Kate Faasse, noted as "the nation's leading goal scorer," and supported by "the national coaching staff of the year," UNC claimed victory over Wake Forest on December 9th in Cary with a score of 1-0 to win their first NCAA women's soccer title since 2012.

Damon Nahas took over as interim head coach just days before the start of the regular season following Anson Dorrance's retirement from his long-standing role. Under Nahas' leadership, UNC reached both an ACC championship game berth and secured a No.2 seed in the NCAA Tournament where they dominated opponents throughout six matches culminating in a College Cup semifinal win against Duke followed by triumphing over Wake Forest.

Sophomore Olivia Thomas delivered "the game-winner on a breathtaking free kick" propelling Carolina to achieve their record-breaking twenty-second NCAA women's soccer title—a figure unmatched by any other school within this sport's history.

Before their national championship match-up concluded, Nahas was named permanent head coach—becoming only the second individual after Dorrance’s extensive tenure spanning forty-five years at helm—for continuing program legacy moving forward into future seasons ahead.

In field hockey under Erin Matson who received accolades such as ACC Coach-of-the-Year alongside Ryleigh Heck named ACC Offensive Player-of-the-Year plus Charly Bruder recognized through earning MVP honors during tournament play—the team ended up achieving records including an impressive tallying twenty wins against one loss further notching down twenty-seven conference titles thus far whilst appearing once more reaching final-four stage yet again totaling twenty-eight appearances altogether till date now surpassed no less than ever before alike!
