TOWN OF CHAPEL HILL: Black Ice Likely, Town Services Return Sunday
0Comments

Town of Chapel Hill issued the following announcement on Jan. 20.

The Town of Chapel Hill is urging anyone who must travel overnight Saturday and early Sunday morning to use caution. Please try to limit any travel to daytime Sunday when conditions will improve with temperatures well above freezing.

“Thanks to the hard work of our staff beginning Thursday and through the weekend, with the assistance of a sunny day today, we made excellent progress on getting roads cleared,” said Chapel Hill Public Works Director Lance Norris. “We know everyone is eager to get back to being able to travel under safer conditions after two weekends of winter weather, and we appreciate everyone’s patience as our crews worked around the clock.”

NC DOT crews cleared its five primary routes. Chapel Hill Parks & Recreation Parks Maintenance staff also assisted with clearing some sidewalks, parking lots, and Chapel Hill Transit bus stops. Black Ice Concerns

Temperatures will quickly fall below freezing after sunset Saturday; anything wet on hard surfaces—especially bridges and overpasses—is likely to refreeze, creating hazardous travel conditions. Public Works and Parks & Recreation crews will be ready to apply salt to trouble spots Sunday morning.

Normal Operations Sunday

With this great progress, Town services and facilities that normally operate on Sunday plan to open on time.

Chapel Hill Transit is planning to follow normal routes and schedules. Some delays or detours may be necessary. Visit townofchapelhill.org/government/departments-services/transit/inclement-weather for more information.

Chapel Hill Public Library (chapelhillpubliclibrary.org/about-chpl/) and Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation (townofchapelhill.org/government/departments-services/parks-and-recreation) plan to open on time Sunday.
