Town of Chapel Hill issued the following announcement on Dec. 10.

The Chapel Hill Town Council held its organizational meeting Wednesday, swearing in the Mayor and Town Council Members for the new term.

Mayor Pam Hemminger opened the meeting by recapping some of the many accomplishments the Council has achieved in the last four years.

“I’m really proud of this council and the work we’ve done,” said Mayor Hemminger. “We not only worked really hard to keep people safe during the pandemic, we worked really hard to keep people fed and businesses open. We worked hard to keep people where they were living. We convened a Re-Imagining Community Safety Task Force, passed guidelines to improve policing and hired the Town’s first Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer, took steps towards a more sustainable and resilient future by declaring a climate emergency and adopting a climate action plan. And we supported our goals of being a diverse and inclusive community by awarding over $5.2 million to create 278 new units of affordable housing. We also earned the score of 100 on the Municipal Equality Index in support of our LGBTQ community.”

The Council passed resolutions of appreciation for each of the outgoing Council members: Allen Buansi and Hongbin Gu.

Mayor Hemminger was sworn in to her fourth term; she was first elected to the position in 2015.

Camille Berry, Paris Miller-Foushee, and Adam Searing were sworn in to their first terms on the Council; Karen Stegman was sworn in to her second term. The Council voted unanimously to appoint Council Member Stegman as Mayor Pro Tem.

The Council’s next meeting is a Work Session January 5 followed by a Regular Business Meeting January 12. Visit townofchapelhill.org/calendar for more details.
