TOWN OF HILLSBOROUGH: Help Maintain the Gold Park Pollinator Garden
0Comments

Town of Hillsborough issued the following announcement on Feb. 25.

Enjoy working alongside master gardeners while volunteering at the Gold Park pollinator garden Thursday, March 3, weather permitting. The main task will be preparing the garden for spring growth by weeding, cutting back dry stalks and pruning shrubs.

Gathering at 8 a.m., volunteers will work in the garden for no more than two hours. The workdays generally take place the first Thursday of each month, March through October. Those who wish to participate in the March workday are asked to bring a weeding tool, a bucket to collect the weeds, pruning shears, gloves and a water bottle.

The pollinator garden is located near the train trestle at the town park, 415 Dimmocks Mill Road. It is maintained by the Orange County Master Gardener Program, which is administered through the Orange County Center for the N.C. Cooperative Extension. In addition to providing nectar and larval food for pollinators, the demonstration garden allows community members to observe and learn about pollinators.

The Town of Hillsborough is part of the Bee City USA program, working to raise awareness about the role pollinators play in sustaining more than 75% of the world’s plant species. A native bee hotel is adjacent to the garden. For more information about the Bee City USA designation or the town’s public spaces, contact Public Space Manager Stephanie Trueblood by email or by phone at 919-296-9481.

A video about the pollinator garden workdays is available on the town’s YouTube channel. For more information on the Gold Park pollinator garden and volunteering or to donate plants, contact the garden’s coordinator, Frances Harris, by email at va.harris.fam@gmail.com or by phone at 919-241-4822.
