TOWN OF HILLSBOROUGH: Tourism Budget Hearings to Be Held June 6 and 8
0Comments

Town of Hillsborough issued the following announcement on June 6.

The Tourism Board and Tourism Development Authority will hold public hearings on their proposed budgets next week. The Tourism Board public hearing will take place at 5:30 p.m. June 6. The Tourism Development Authority budget public hearing will take place at 7 p.m. June 8. Both public hearings will take place in the Board Meeting Room at the Town Hall Annex, 105 E. Corbin St.

Tourism Board

The Tourism Board is a board created by special state legislation that decides how to reinvest the town’s prepared food and beverage tax to drive economic development by promoting travel, tourism and visitor services.

The board pays contract partners for providing tourist and visitor services for the town. The contract partners are the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough, Burwell School Historic Site, Hillsborough Arts Council and Orange County Historical Museum. The board also funds special projects and partnerships and typically awards grants each May.

Last month the board awarded a $7,000 grant to the Hillsborough Arts Council to support an expanded Solstice Lantern Walk. The grant is pending budget approval by the Hillsborough Board of Commissioners.

Tourism Development Authority

The Tourism Development Authority promotes travel, tourism and conventions; sponsors tourism-related events; and finances tourism-related capital projects. The authority is responsible for administering the proceeds of a 3-percent room occupancy tax. At least two-thirds of the tax’s proceeds must fund travel and tourism promotion, with the rest available for other tourism-related expenditures.
