Town of Carrboro issued the following announcement on Sept. 25.
HAPPY 50TH! Mayor Lydia Lavelle proclaims Saturday, Sept. 26, as Community School for People Under Six Day in the Town of Carrboro.
“We join the faculty, staff and many volunteers who support the Community School for People Under Six in a celebration of its 50 years as a valued member of our community, and sincerely hope that this outstanding institution continues to provide its vital services for many decades to come,” Mayor Lavelle said.
A private, nonprofit organization founded in 1970, the Community School for People Under Six http://www.cspu6.org is a parent/staff cooperative providing high quality early care and education for all children, especially those of low and middle income families.
It was established at a time when North Carolina was still in the process of desegregating its schools to meet the requirements of the United States Supreme Court’s Brown vs Board of Education decision. The Community School was originally located on the border between Black and White communities with the intention of serving as a bridge between those communities.
